Like A Walk In June

Borrowing from Jean-Paul Sartre’s statement: To read a poem in January is as lovely as to go for a walk in June, I venture to say that: To view photography of natural beauty in January is as lovely as to go for a walk in June, particularly when one is perusing spectacular collections like those of Brother Alfred Brousseau.

Brother Brousseau (1907-1988) earned his PhD in Physics in 1937 from the University of California and taught physics and math for many years at St. Mary’s College. As a past-time, he compiled over 20,000 slides of California flowers, trees, fungi, and wilderness scenery.

These are now available to the public online. A delightful way to spend a few quiet January hours when the weather is drear and home-fires are burning is to wander inside his virtual gallery, hosted by University of California, Berkeley (my alma mater).

Having been driven away from our California mountain home by recent winter storms, now that power has been restored and we’re back inside our warm hideaway, I appreciate my graceful stroll through the kind Brother’s albums all the more.
