until you’ve … ?
… eaten a grilled salmon sandwich at the Port Townsend Farmers Market!
Hardly the answer you’d expect, right? This emphatic claim was made by a friendly transplant from Santa Cruz, California, working at the Northwest Maritime Center and Wooden Boat Foundation chandlery where we were reminiscing about our own sailing adventures and browsing through nautical novelties one blue-skied August afternoon.
Walk to the top of the hill, turn left at Lawrence Street by the big yellow Victorian, continue about four or five blocks, and you’ll see the market. They’re open ’til 2 on Saturdays.
We took his enthusiastic suggestion as a good-natured challenge and set off posthaste ~ it was already 1:15 ~ on a mission to try this purportedly savory delectability first-hand.
Once uptown (and a little out of breath), a single query and quick reply were all we needed to locate the popular Cape Cleare Salmon Stand. We were glad to find out that Cape Cleare salmon was “line caught and handled with care” (learn why this is ecologically and nutritionally important).
In minutes the object of our culinary desire was before us. We took a big test bite. Sure enough, it was as delicious as we had imagined (see this week’s image ~ above right).
Now our new mission is to seek out this gentleman ~ just to let him know that We’ve lived!
