I went to turn the grass once after one
Who mowed it in the dew before the sun.

The dew was gone that made his blade so keen
Before I came to view the levelled scene.

Woven In Memory

Reflecting on how memory of certain flowers is interlaced with distinct moments in life, I acknowledge dogwood (Cornus florida):

Spring 2001, when we traveled with our younger son to Yosemite National Park – a time when abundant yellow-hued dogwood adorned the valley;

Spring 2002 and 2003, when a magnificent, wide-armed pink dogwood off Zayante Road in Felton became the favorite backdrop for seasonal family photos; and

Spring 2004, when, strolling along Robles Lane in Bonny Doon with my dear friend Laura (sadly lost to cancer), we came upon a single white dogwood tree, magically glowing in a shady grove of old redwood and spruce.

Every October select artists in our city open their studios to the public. Open Studios, sponsored by the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County, provides a prime window for artists to showcase their work and to meet face-to-face the people who appreciate and purchase their art. Each year in Córdova (Andalucia), southern Spain, gardeners open their courtyards (Patios de Córdova), grilles and balconies (Rejas y Balcones de Córdova) to the public and compete in a contest, that – taking in account architectonic values and floral design – chooses the most beautiful courtyard, grille, and balcony in the city.

Each Spring I look forward to seeing which of the lilac bushes in the garden will be first to bloom. Usually the dark purple blossoms appear first, then come the softer shades of purple, and finally the pearly-white flowers. With the season’s cool days and colder nights, the flowers can last for weeks; but once picked, both blossoms and their sweet, subtle perfume fade quickly.

Don’t go outside your house to see flowers.

-it’s april(yes,april;my darling)it’s spring!
yes the pretty birds frolic as spry as can fly
yes the little fish gambol as glad as can be
(yes the mountains are dancing together)

One Flower At A Time

Four years ago Federico Hewson, an American performance artist living in Amsterdam, asked himself a hypothetical question: Would it be possible to bring Valentine’s Day, the day of Love, together with the cause of Peace, since Love and Peace are intimately connected, to create a celebration of inner, community, and global peace? From this query and his resounding positive affirmation, Valentine Peace Project was born.
