Hawaiian Snow Bush

I first noticed this striking yet subtly attractive shrub on Maui’s southeast shore, on the verdant grounds of Palapala Ho’omau Church in Kipahulu, where famed aviator, Charles Lindbergh, who spent his final years near Hana, lies modestly at rest.

The Hawaiian Snow Bush’s lightly colored foliage (its common name is also “Foliage Flower”) makes it a gardener’s delight. The plant’s ability to change color is fascinating. In sunny locations, the color of its new leaves is green, then changes to maroon, pink, and finally turns to pure white. In the shade, the leaves turn green.

Native to New Caledonia and Vanuatu, this perennial evergreen is also successfully cultivated in parts of the continental U.S.
