Blue Willow

Once upon a time … actually, this would be an ideal way to begin the story behind the Blue Willow design of dinnerware because it is an ancient tale. Its origins date back to feudal China. One version involves secret societies and invading marauders while another tells the tale of the early Buddhists who called heaven The City of Willows. The design, originally called Mandarin, features a great willow tree in the foreground, a bridge with three figures on it, and a walled temple in the background. Above a body of water are two doves eternally bound together.

With Gold In Their Hills (Part I)

in General,Guest Writers,Weekly Post

Throughout 2011, Images For Renewal will publish excerpts from wine writer Steve Dryden’s Vino Mundo series. This post about the wines from the Gorizia region represents the first of the series and was written while Steve was traveling in Italy in December 2010.

Massive amounts of pure gold are being unearthed in the province of Gorizia in northeastern Italy along the Slovenian border. Within this “magical-like kingdom” of Austrian-Hungarian and Italian decent lies the wine region of Collio, which produces distinct white wines with 14K gold color. Not only are these wines beautiful in color, but the flavors drawn from the rich mineral soils are interpreted by the vines and fruit varietals into stunning white wines of elegance, finesse, and distinction.

Dish Flower Patterns (Part I)

Floral patterns have been used to decorate just about everything and appear almost everywhere. They have been used so extensively, that we take them for granted even though we pass them by everyday. One area of design we may not notice is on dinnerware. The floral patterns depicted here reflect the art work of great designers and remind us of a history in which flowers played a central part.

After decades of living and painting in or near Paris, Renoir settled permanently in Cagnes-sur-Mer in 1907 at age 67 where he spent the last 11 years of his life. The mild Mediterranean climate, the colorful landscape and the luminous light inspired perhaps his greatest work.

Beyond The Divide

Infinite chasms
Between one and the other,
Sister, brother.
Between us and them,
Between all we want and how things are.
Terrible voids to abide
It’s an art
To live beyond the divide.

This poem was written for a Peace Project organized by Judy Fisk Lucas. I wrote it thinking of the flooding along the Mississippi a few years back, but it seems relevant every time another place falls to waters, like Nashville, just recently.
